In the department of Estelí, specifically in the municipality of Pueblo Nuevo, is the paleontological site of El Bosque. Here are fossils that date between 20,000 and 30,000 years old. There was also evidence of the existence of human life of 13,000 years old, being thus one of the oldest of Central America.
In the department of Estelí there are 55 places with archaeological vestiges, there is no municipality that does not have a place to visit to know the life of the first settlers of the region. Among them, the municipality of Condega was declared an Archaeological Municipality because of the large number of places where findings were made.

Natural Reserves in Estelí Nicaragua
The Tisey-La Estanzuela Nature Reserve, in the town of Estelí, with the well known Salto de la Estanzuela, its trails and caves and the possibility of tasting authentic sheep and goat's cheese in Garnacha.

The city of Estelí, popularly known as "The Diamond of the Segovias", is located 146 kilometers from the capital Managua, and is a must visit when passing through the northern part of Nicaragua.

History of Estelí
In the sixteenth century the territory of the present city of Estelí was inhabited by the sumos, the matagalpas, the nahuals and the chorotegas, evidence of the existence of these populations is preserved today in the archaeological sites of Las Pintadas and La Joya where Are several petroglyphs from pre-Columbian times.
Of the colonial time very little or nothing is left, due to the bombings to which the city was submitted in the years 1978 and 1979.

The Museum of Archeology and History Doctor Alejandro Bolaños Dávila, is located next to the Municipal Library, Plaza Domingo Gadea. The museum offers a variety of attractions, from petroglyphs and remains of pre-Columbian archaeological remains, to an exhibition of photographs referring to the history of the city in various stages, as well as an important collection of coins and banknotes.
Estelí, the three times heroic city, is undoubtedly marked by its more recent history. Contiguous to the House of Culture we find the Galeríade Heroes and Martyrs, where we can know, through his photographic exhibition and writings of the same protagonists, among others, the Sandinista Revolution.

Tobacco in Estelí
Estelí has gained in the last decades another recognition, being the national center of the tobacco. In Estelí not only the tobacco plant is cultivated but also the raw material is transformed offering to the national market, but above all international pure of recognized quality. Of the 25 best cigars in the world, 13 are elaborated in Estelí, and of The top 10, the tobacco produced here occupy the top 7, according to data from the magazine Cigars Aficionado.Los fields around the city are flooded by endless extensions of tobacco plantations. Estelí always stays green.
The production and processing of tobacco has become the main economic engine of the city, with all tobacco processes working directly and indirectly about 30,000 families. There are in the city more than 35 tobacco companies, which are engaged in the manufacture of cigars. But this ruble offers in recent years a new tourist attraction. It is possible to visit the tobacco companies and to be able to know up close the whole process of processing the cigar. The Tobacco Route has been set up and since 2012 the "Tobacco Festival" has been held in January.

Festivities
The patron saint festivities of the city of Estelí are on October 7 in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary. Also noteworthy are the celebration of the Virgin of Carmen on July 16. This date is also a celebration for the city since it commemorates the anniversary of the Liberation of the Somocista Dictatorship of the City of Estelí.

HOW TO GET ESTELI?
Estelí is 146 km north of Managua. At Km 105, from the junction of Sébaco, follow the Panamericana highway north. Before arriving in Estelí, turning left you will reach the area of Tisey and La Garnacha. -Duly indicated-
Following the Panamericana one arrives to Condega and later it is the union that leads to Pueblo Nuevo, turning to the left. Before Condega, by a secondary road, to the right, you reach the area of Miraflor.- It is properly indicated-
It is possible to arrive to Estelí from Honduras, passing through the border posts of El Espino or Las Manos, following the Pan-American Highway 70 kilometers south to Managua.
Buses to Estelí from Managua:
From El Mayoreo terminal, buses leave for Estelí. You can check the bus schedules. You are also served by all who go to Somoto, Ocotal and Jalapa.
