Santa María is a small municipality located 274 kilometers from Managua and 54 kilometers from the departmental head, Ciudad de Ocotal.

In the community of Las Trojas, 5 kilometers south of the town, you can find La Cueva del Duende, where you can see paintings and drawings from the pre-Columbian era.
As in other municipalities of the region, in Santa Maria, there are hot springs, known with the name of the community where they are located, Aguas Calientes.
If you travel by own car from the City of Ocotal you must take the road that goes to the municipality of Macuelizo, and from there go to the dirt road that will take you to Santa Maria.
